AutoCAD is a 2D drafting software application. Many as-built building models were initially created using AutoCAD. In recent years, key industry players and government agencies have been pushing for the use of 3D BIM software for managing infrastructure projects.
With 2D & 3D drafting functionality that is similar to AutoCAD, MicroStation is a CAD tool designed by Bentley systems that is frequently used in BIM projects.
Revit (RVT) is a popularly used BIM Modelling product for creating building models, drawings, and schedules. It is most commonly used in station projects, as well as ancillary buildings such as substations and pump house serving road tunnels. It is a product by Autodesk and pairs well with AutoCAD (for 2D documentation) and Navisworks (for BIM review and coordination).
Bentley OpenRail (DGN) is commonly deployed in trackwork projects as it can effectively create 3D rail horizontal and vertical alignment, canting, and parametric rail corridor models. OpenRail is sometimes used in conjunction with GenerativeComponents for modelling tunnel viaducts.
Bentley OpenRoads (DGN) consists of the OpenRoads ConceptStation, OpenRoads Designer, OpenRoads SignCAD, and OpenRoads Navigator. The product shares a similar interface with OpenRail and has road-specific modelling tools. It is a Bentley product formerly known as “InRoads” and pairs well with MicroStation (for 2D documentation) and Navigator (for BIM review and coordination).
Bentley OpenBuilding (DGN), previously known as AECOsim, is a specific tool for creating building models, drawings and schedules. It is a Bentley product formerly known as “AECOsim” and works well with other Bentley products such as OpenRail and OpenRoads, which is why we have used it for modelling foundations connected to roads and rail infrastructure. GenerativeComponents is an included product that automates modelling processes.
Autodesk Civil 3D (DWG, DXF) is a product by Autodesk that is meant for civil infrastructure design and documentation. It is an AutoCAD vertical product. Features in the product support a variety of civil infrastructure projects including rail, roads and highways, land development, airports, drainage, storm and sanitary and civil structures.
Autodesk Navisworks (NWD, NWF) is a BIM Review product by Autodesk that allows users to open and combine 3D models, navigate around them in real-time and review the model using a set of tools including comments, redlining, viewpoints and measurements. It is best used for reviewing Revit models. It can read 3D DGN and PRP files from MicroStation but does not support CEL files or 2D DGN files.
Bentley Navigator is a BIM Review product by Bentley that allows users to open and review models and drawings. It is used most commonly to review model files created using other Bentley products, though you can also use i-model as a container to bring in files created using non-Bentley applications. It can connect to ProjectWise, and you can use it on the web or mobile interface.
Synchro is a Construction Project Management software that allows various stakeholders to review, communicate, and interact in a fully digital environment. This includes elements such as construction schedules, costs, as well as resources. Native BIM models can be linked to the baseline programme in SynchroPro as part of 4D BIM deliverables.
CostX is a 3D BIM and 2D cost estimation tool that allows you to perform accurate measurements as well as perform quantity take-offs from BIM models.
